But the second element seems to have changed since the nth cent., as the Domesday form (twice) was Schipewic [Old English wíc, a place]
A parish in the East Riding of Yorkshire. The first who assumed the name was Patrick de Skipwith, who flourished in the reign of Henry I. He was the second son of Robert de Estoteville, or Stuteville, baron of Cottingham in the reign of William the Conqueror. Shirley's Noble and Gentle Men.
Or De Estoteville, of Normandy, a well-known family, which need not be dwelt on. The arms confirm the descent. which, however, is not exactly in the line usually supposed. See Stutfield.
