SKIRLING: From Skirling (1275 Scravelyn, 1299 Scravillyn), a village and parish in west Peeblesshire. Adam de Scrawelyn was abbot of Culross, c. 1335 (SCM., V, p. 244). William Skyrlyn was witness in Glasgow, 1520 (RAA., II, p. 429), and another William Skirling witnessed a charter to Mariorie Orrok, daughter of Alexander Orrok of Selybalbe, in 1523 (RD., p. 380). William Skraveling had a lease of the eighth part of Grange, c. 1570 (RD., p. 487), John Skirling is recorded in Dunfermline in 1571 (Dunfermline), and Balthazair Skirling was burgess of Perth in 1607 (RPC., VII, p. 333).
