As Skirvane it was one of the comnionest surnames in the parish of Haddington in the eighteenth century (Archaeologia Scotica, I, p. 419). 'Black John Skirving' was said to have been the Earl Marischal's standard bearer at Fiodden, 1513. Patrick Skirving was heir of Alexander Skirving, burgess of Edinburgh, his father, 1667 (Inquis., 5082). William Skirving, secretary to the Scottish Friends of the People, 1793, was sentenced by the notorious Braxfield to transportation for fourteen years. Adam Skirving, an East Lothian farmer, author of the song "Tranent Muir," was wrongly credited with authorship of the better-known song "Hey, Johnnie Cope. ' George Skirving, portioner of Melrose, 1813 (Heirs, 603). Skirven 1687.
