Slipper Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
Occup 'the slipper,' i.e. a maker of sword-slips (see Swordslipper), an important craft in its day. (2) Nick. 'the sleeper,' a dull, heavy, sleepy sort of a fellow.
Simon le Slepar, Oxfordshire, 1273. Hundred Rolls.
Johannes Slipar, 1379: Poll Tax of Yorkshire.
(English) short for Sword-Slipper, i.e. Slip- or Scabbard - Maker [from Middle English slip(p)en, to slip; from a variant of Old English slúpan, to slip, glide] (Scandinavian) Grinder, Whetter, Polisher [Old Norseslípari, whence Dano-Norwegian sliber, Swedish slipare (slipa, to sharpen, etc.); and cp. Dutch slijper, grinder, etc.] Brand quotes two 16th-cent. Newcastle instances of the trade-name sword-slipper, and Halliwell a 17th - cent. Hexham example of sword-sliper. It is really doubtful whether the 14th - cent. Yorkshire occupative surnames Swerdslyper and Swerdsliper belong to 1 or 2.
Cp. Sleeper.
1. A sword-slyper., a cutler, one whose principal work was to whet swords. Acts James VI. Teutonic slippen, acuere. Belgic slyper, a whetter. Jamieson. 2. One who wishes to sneak away for fear of detection. Ibid. 3. One who is tawdry and slovenly in dress. Ibid.-all under the word slyper.
The same as Slyper. From the old word sword-sleiper, a sword-grinder; from Teutonic, schwerdt-schleiffer. Slyper is the name of a diamond-cutter in London. Hence no doubt the surname Sleeper. The name Slipper has been connected with the Spanish name Zapata; and zapáta, zapáto is a kind of half-boot. Mellado gives three Spaniards of the name of Zapata—Antonio Zapata de Cisneros, a cardinal, born at Madrid in 1550; Antonio or Lupian Zapata, born at Segorbe in the seventeenth century; and Antonio Zapata, born at Soria at the end of the seventeenth century. The latter was one of the most celebrated of the pupils of Antonio Palomino, and, among many others, painted a fine picture of St. Peter and St. Paul for the cathedral of Osma. The name is probably derived from locality. Zapata is the appellation of a district of Spain, prov. Avila; and of a place prov. Pontevedra. Zapateros is the name of a village prov. Córdoba; and there are places in Spain called Zapategui, Zapateira, Zapateiro, Zapatera, Zapateria, Zapatero, and Zapaton.
From the Old Norse, Sleppi; nickname from the Danish, Schlippe; from the German, Schleppe; a personal name.$
