The Surnames of Scotland (1946) by George Fraser Black (1866-1948)

SLURACH: "Slurach et fres ejus et omes clanqwhevil" were put to horn in 1392 for their share in the Raid of Angus in the preceding year (APS., I, p. 579), Sluiach is generally considered to be a transcriber's error for Sheach. The theory that the combatants at Perth in 1396 were Shaws and Farquharsons is negatived by the fact that neither of these clans was in existence at that date. Lachlan Shaw, the historian of Moray, was of opinion that the combatants were Macphersons and Davidsons, forgetful of the fact that the Macphersons and Davidsons were too insignificant at that date to have caused such a disturbance. The late A. M. Mackintosh, Clan Chattan historian, was of opinion that the combatants were Clan Chattan and Clan Cameron, but, as the eighth duke of Argyll says, nobody to this day can make out with any certainty who the combatants were. compare Slora.
