SLOAN, Sloane, Slowan: From Irish O'Sluaghain, for O'Sluaghadain, 'descendant of SLaghadan,' probably a variant of O'Sluaghodhaigh, from the MIr. personal name Sluagadach, leader of a military expedition.' compare Slogadadh. William Slowane held a tenement near Dalkeith in 1504 (Soltre, p. 324), and Johnne Slowane of Garroche was juror on assize at Kirkcudbright, 1508 (Trials, I, p. 55). John Aslowane de eodem is mentioned in 1531 (ALHT., V, p. 396), and John Asloan of Garroch appears as a witness in 1542 (Anderson). John Aslowane, burgess of Edinburgh, was contractor of the "leid mynis of Glengoner and Wenlok," 1562 (RPC., I, p. 232), and another John Sloane had sasine of land in the parish of Traquair in 1565 (ER., XIX, p. 540). John Slowane was tenant under the abbot of Kelso, 1567 (Kelso, p. 524), John Aslowane was burgess of Edinburgh in 1568 (MCM., II, p. 311), and a third John Aslowan had sasine of the lands of Auchincreyth, 1590 (ER., XXII, p. 521). George Aslowane, son to the laird of Garroche, was charged in 1613 with taking part in the performance of mass against the Act of Parliament (Trials, III, p. 253), Eduard Aslowane is recorded in Fell in 1616 (Kirkcudbright), and Alexander Slowen was a baker in Edinburgh, 1659 (Edinb. Man.). Sir Hans Sloane (1660-1753), was born in the north of Ireland of Scots parents. His collections were the foundation of the British Museum. Asloane 1631, Aslowen 1611, Slowan 1684.
