Thomas Smale appears as witness in Roxburgh, c. 1338 (Dryburgh, 313), and Cristiana: widow of Thomas Small, held the vill of Estir Softlawe in Teuidalle, 1360 (Bain, IV, 50). William Small was a tenant of the Douglas in Linton, 1376 (RHM., II, p. 16). Simo Smale was a forestaller in Ellon, Aberdeenshire, 1402; and John Smale was admitted burgess of Aberdeen, 1407 (NSCM., I, p. 2).
