From the Old English personal name Smert, found in Suffolk, 1066. Smert is still the common pronunciation ot the name in Scotland. John Smert, a Scot, was charged with breaking his parole in 1358 (Bain, IV, 25), and William Smert was tenant in Telny in the barony of Abirdoure, Fife, in 1376 (RHM., I, p. lxtv). Henry Smert, Scotsman, prisoner of war, was released to find ransom for himself and others in 1422 (Bain, IV, 914). John Smert was a citizen of Brechin in 1452 (REB., II, p. 88), another John Smert, 'husband,' was witness in 1481 (Panmure, II, 252), and Johannes Smert held land in Kintore in 1488 (REA., I, p. 341). William Smart, burgess of Tain, was fined for reset of members of outlawed Clan Gregor, 1612 (RPC., IX, p. 520). There were families of this name at Muresk and Tollochin in sixteenth century, native tanners.

The Smarts of Ashby de la Zouche, Leicestershire, are descended from Ithiel Smart, vicar of that place in the reign of Charles II., whose father resided at Preston in Northamptonshire (Nichols' "Leicestershire"). The name was represented in Great Claybrook, Leicestershire, 200 years ago, and there were Smarts of Huncote in the same county during the reign of Charles I., and Smarts of Thurleston, also in that county, in the past century (ibid.).
