It is quite unusual even in Sweden and some records show it being used as early as the 15th century. Most density is it in Småland, south of Sweden, where it seems to have originated and therefore during the great migration to the United States in 18th and 19th centuries, some people use it today in America. There's even a lake named Smedberg in California, USA.
