From the lands of Smytheton or Smythetun, now Smeaton, near Musselburgh, Midlothian. Henry de Smithetone of the county of Edneburk rendered homage in 1296 (Bain, II, p. 210). Henricus de Smeithtone, juror on an inquisition at Muskylburg in 1359 (RD., p. 267). Alexander Smeythtone had a gift of 12 marks land in Eistrud, Shetland, in 1506 (BM., D-, p. 108), and Erasmus Smittoune in Snarravo, Unst, is in record in 1613 (Shetland). Thomas Smeton or Smeaton (1536-83) was principal of Glasgow University, Smeetoun 1646, Smeiton 1680, Smeton and Smetoun 1584, Smettoun 1624, Smeytone 1678, Smitton 1745.
