William Smellie (1740-1795), printer and naturalist in Edinburgh. Smeallie 1647, Smyllie 1697. Smillie recorded in Edinburgh, 1942. Harrison derives the name as a variant of Smalley, from the name of a place in Derbyshire, but I feel doubtful of this.
