This uncommon surname, found mainly in Edinburgh and the southeast of Scotland, appears to be simply a corruption of "smooth beard." John Smetheberde, monk of Neubotle, was witness to a charter by Alan Lokart, laird of Lee, in 1467 (Neubotle, p. 263; see also p. 261,314). William Smeberd appears as witness to an instrument of lands near Gullane in 1519, and another William Smeithberd was a member of the Edinburgh town council in 1530 (MCM., II, p. 107). William Smeithberd or Smeithberde appointed "Maister armorar" to the king in 1526 (RSS., 3402) appears again between 1538-40 as William Smeberd or Smythberd, armourer to the king (ER., XVII, p. 170,283). Alexander Smethberd was canon of Holyrood, 1547 (Binns, 40), Jhone Smeberd possessed a house in North Berwick in 1555 (CMN., p. 70), and in the following year Sir Alexander Smeberd appears as vicar of the parish church of Wr (Urr) (LSC., p. 298). William Smeberde who appears on an inquest held in the burgh of the Canongate, Edinburgh, in 1561 (MCM., II, p. 289) is probably the same individual who had trouble with the kirk-session over the baptizing of his bairn in 1564 (Kirk session records of the Canongate quoted in Chambers, Dom. Ann. Scot., I). Jimes Smithbaird in parish of Crichton, 1689 (RPC., 3. ser. XIV p. 145).
