A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames (1896) by Charles Wareing Endell Bardsley

This name is usually associated with Kilkenny on account of the well-known brewery there, but in fact since Col. Henry Smithwick obtained an extensive estate in the barony of Duhallow, Co. Cork, under the Cromwellian Settlement, the family has been established in that county as well as in the Carlow-Kilkenny area. The “census” of 1659 shows Col. Henry Smithwick to be still in active command of his regiment, stationed at that time in Drogheda, and in the same document and also in the lists of poll money commissioners (1660-1661) we find a Henry Smithwick in Co. Carlow, while in 1665 he and his son, another Henry, are parties to a transaction relating to land in Co. Kilkenny in which they had an existing interest. Again in 1673 and 1678 one of these Henry Smithwicks was appointed a commissioner to carry out the act providing for the disarming of Catholics. This family frequently appears in our records e.g. in the Orrery Papers. Somewhat later they became considerable landowners in Co.

Tipperary. William Smithwick appears as a J.P. in north Tipperary in 1715 and 1727, and by the end of the last century one branch had been long established at Portroe on the Tipperary side of Lough Derg. In 1878 they owned 1150 acres there and another branch possessed over 2000 acres in Co. Kilkenny. The fact that the will of Dorothy Smithwick was proved in the Cork diocesan court in 1642 indicates that at least one family of Smithwick was in Ireland before the Cromwellian upheaval.

Though the Smithwicks of Co. Cork are Cromwellian, those of the Carlow-Kilkenny area were established there earlier in the seventeenth century.
