This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'at the smithy,' with suffix (perhaps patronymic) s, as in Brooks, Styles, &c. Smithers is a vulgar corruption. (2) Local, 'of Smethurst.' It seems almost certain that Smithers is more generally a corruption of Smethurst (v. Register of the University of Oxford. vol. ii. pt. iv.). No doubt the two are mixed.
