User-submitted Reference

Many family members think that the family got their surname from a village and civil parish in Derbyshire, England called Kniveton. A few think it might have Dutch or German origins. The history of Rye, Westchester County, New York tells us that the North American branch of the family first immigrated to Stratford, Connecticut, and then migrated to Rye, New York in 1666. It is not clear how the two forms, one with a K and one with S got started, but early records show that they are interchangeable; however, Kniffen is the most common spelling today.
