From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

his surname is derived from the name of an ancestor. 'the son of Snow'; compare Winter, Frost, and such ecclesiastical seasons (as distinct from the natural) as Pentecost, Nowell, Pask, Whitsunday, or Midwinter. A name given originally to a child born in the time of snow. The practice is repeated to-day. A clergyman wrote to me some time ago to say he had just baptized a child by the name of Sou'-wester. This turned out to be the father's Christian name, who was born on board ship in a sou'-westerly gale.

"Snow is the same name as that of an old, perhaps a mythical, king of Denmark. Some old German names are compounded with it; and perhaps Snowball may be of similar origin-bald or ball, bold." Ferguson. I am disposed, however, to refer Snowball to the same class as Peppercorn, Pluckrose, Pullrose, &c., as derived from old feudal tenures. Blount records the holding of certain lands by the payment of "one red rose at Christmas, and one snowball at Midsummer," which in the old unluxurious days, before conservatories and ice-houses were invented, must have caused the tenant many an anxious thought as to the means of "raising his rent."

An Etymological Dictionary of Family and Christian Names (1857) by William Arthur

The Snows are now found in Devon, Essex, and Staffordshire. In the 13th century the name was represented in the form of Snou in Wilts, Bucks, Oxfordshire, Suffolk, and Cambridgeshire (H. R.).
