Sofiane Surname Meaning
User-submitted Reference
Sefiane is a town in the Batna province of Algeria, and an even smaller town in Sidi Kacem, Nord Ouest, Morocco. Sefiane (the word that these towns have taken their name from, and some people, namely of North African heritage, have as their surname) is an unconventional variant of the more popular Arabic name, Sufyan. Sufyan is a pre-Islamic name that has several possible meanings. It may derive its meaning from the Arabic word, ṣafā, meaning 'purity', or ṣūf, meaning 'wool'. Another possible origin is from Persian, in which it would mean either 'fast walker' or 'thunderstorm', 'sandstorm'. There is also a possibility that it is of Armenian origin, which would make its meaning 'comes with a sword'. The ultimate definition is disputed. Suffice it to say, people that claim any of the variants of this unusual name may pick and choose for themselves what it means to them, based on all its possible denotations. Well-known bearers of this name or one of its derivatives include Abu Sufyan ibn Harb, Sufjan Stevens, Sofiane Tadjine-Lambert, and Sofyan Amrabat.
