SOFFLEY: A lazy pronunciation of Softlaw, which see, which has become a separate surname. James Softly was a weaver in Edinburgh, 1638 (Edinb, Marr,). Roger Safely was charged with having purchased the wife of John Gilkers, indweller in the College of Nithsdale, for a groat in 1663 (RPS., 3. ser. I, p. 405). William Soflay of Holme in record, 1680 (Inquis., 6232), and Roger Saflay of Holme, who signed the Test in 1684 (RPC., 5. ser. X, p. 226) is probably the Roger Sofflaw of Holm, 1701 (Dumfries). Margaret Saffley in Crossmeikle, 1701 (Kirkcudbright), Thomas Sofflaw in Woodhouse of Colvend, 1736, and George Soffley of Fell, 1800 (Dumfries).
