This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'of Soghespich.' Mr. Lower writes: 'This name, borne by more than one respectable family in the West of England, might be supposed to be derived from some legend analogous to that of Romulus and Remus. The earliest form of it, Sokespic, however, excludes such an origin. See Notes and Queries, 1st S. v. 425.' The name is local, and has been turned into an imitative form.
