Sojourner Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

This surname is derived from a nickname, or occup. 'the sojourner.' This surname I have only met with in North Lancashire, between Preston and the Duddon Sands. For centuries it appears in the Ulverston and Dalton registers as Suggener, and in that form a charity was left to the poor of the latter parish. In the Preston Guild Rolls occurs 'John Sojorner, butter-maker,' 1622 (p. 89). Possibly the Sojourner was, like Tasker, a worker by the day or job, a day-labourer, as we now say. If we take it in its accepted sense it will denote a new-comer, who from a passing visitor has become a settler. It is suggested in N. and Q. (Sept. 17, 1887) that the French Sigourney, or Sigournai, is of the same origin.

1547. Married — Thomas Asburner and Elisabeth Suggener: Reg. Parish Ch., Ulverston.

1549. Buried — John Suggener: ibid.
