From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
Ó Soracháin Cos. Monaghan and Gavan. SIF 140
This name, also spelt Soraghan and sometimes abbreviated to Soran, is, and since the seventeenth century has been, associated almost exclusively with the counties of Monaghan and Cavan. It is frequent in the Hearth Money Rolls of Co. Monaghan (1663, 1665) as O'Soraghan and sixty years before a Fiant recorded it somewhat further north at Tullaghoge, Co. Tyrone, in which county an Inquisition of 1632 also found it. It is rather surprising, therefore, to find the name occuring in Co. Waterford in 1312 when Henry O'Sourehan was accused of theft there, but found not guilty.
Saurin (de Sauverne) a Huguenot surname has, as far as I know, never been used as a synonym of Soran; but it has been reported from the Kells area as synonymous with Soden (q. v. supra).
