The basis of the Sorokin surname was the worldly name of Soroka. Last name Sorokin is formed from the non-church male name of Soroka. Such 'bird' names were very popular in the old days. Moreover, Forty in ancient times symbolized luck and was a bird of pleasure. The popping magpie was thought to bring good news and news that guests would come. Therefore, the surname Sorokin is one of the hundred most frequent Russian surnames. According to another, less plausible version, the surname is the nickname of the Forty, which could be given to a chatty person. Magpie, eventually got the name Sorokin.
