The first of this lineage was Egas Gomes de Sousa, a noble of Visigoth origin who resided in what is now Portugal and was lord of the Lands of Sousa (lands of sousa) and Felgueiras and governor of Entre Douro and Minho. He was captain general and defeated the king of Tunisia in combat, according to some sources this Gothic knight is descended from Sisebuto of Coimbra, son of Witiza penultimate King of the Goths and therefore son of the King visigoth Égica.
Of this lineage three branches are known, the first one is the branch of the Sosa (Sousa) of Toledo that were from the times of the reconquest of this city and descend from the Count Fernan Mendes (Mendez) de Sousa, these are the first in Spain and descended by the man line of Mr. Egas Gomes de Sousa, these married in its beginnings with the House of Toledo and the Vásquez family of this city. The other two branches descended from King Alfonso III of Portugal, through his sons Alfonso Dionisio who married Maria Pais Ribeira, who for the death of his brothers without descendants, became the 15th lady and heiress of the Casa de Sousa as well like the one of Aboim, whereas the other son of Alfonso III of Portugal was "Martim Afonso" called "Chichorro" who was son of Madragana Ben Loandro daughter of the governor of Faro, this married with Inês Lourenço de Sousa (or Inês Lourenço de Valadares )(C. 1250 -?), Descended from the Sousa de Arronches and Sousa de Prado, among other families such as Faria Blanc, Machado and Silveira Ramos.
With the above it is concluded that the House of Sosa (Sousa) that took root in Toledo are of Visigothic paternal lineage because they are said to be descendants of King Witiza, while the descendants of the princes Alfonso Dionisio and Martin Alfonso Chichorro sons of King Alfonso III of Portugal are of Frankish paternal lineage for being this descending king of King Clovis I through the House of Burgundy, although also descended from the Goths for being the wives of Alfonso Dionisio and Martin Alfonso Chichorro descendants of Egas Gomes de Sousa. Due to a male breakdown (extinction of male descendants) of the Sousa of Portugal, the Portuguese royalty ordered that the descendants of Alfonso Dionisio and Martin Alfonso Chichorro bears this illustrious surname with preference over that of the royal family of Portugal so that this surname not extinguished.
