Perhaps from the occupation of soapmaker, ME. soper(e). William Super or Souper, carpenter, was paid for work done, 1689 (RPC., 3. ser. XIV, p. 649-650). William Souper was retoured heir of John Souper, merchant of Aberdeen, his father, 1698 (Retours, Aberdeen, 507). William Soupar in Collonoch, mentioned in 1716 (SCM., IV, p. 171), and Patrick Souper in Aberdeen, 1732 (NSCM., II). The name still exists in Aberdeen. Soap was first manufactured in Scotland in 1619.
