Suðhamtun [Old English súð, south; hám, home, residence, or ham(m, enclosure, piece of land, dwelling (none of the Anglo-Saxon forms of the name which I have noted has the a marked as long) + tún, farm, estate, etc.: prob. Homtun or Hamtun may here be interpreted ‘Home-Farm’, answering partly to the Old Norse heima-land, ‘home- estate’. If a dative form Heámtúne, ‘at the high place’ (v. under Hampton), had authentically been found the description would suit Southampton] Fr’es minores de Suthampton.—Inq. ad q. Damn., A.D. 1326.
