SOUTRA: From Soutra, an ancient parish in East Lothian, the old spelling of which was Soltre. Sir John de Seltre or Soltre was chaplain to the bishop of Aberdeen and a charter witness, c. 1240 (REA., I, p. 16; II, p. 272). In 1243 he witnessed ratification of the church of Lescelyn to the Abbey of Lindores (LAC., p. 90). Waller de Soltre, burgess of Berwick, made a grant of land to the Hospital of Soltre, c, 1250-66 (Soltre, p. 31). William Soltre, cellerarius, and magister John Soltre witnessed the gift by William Heryote to the Abbey of Newbotyll in 1458 (Neubotle, p. 245,246). William Soltre or Soltree, a monk of the same house, appears as witness in charters by Alan Lokart, laird of Lee, 1467 (ibid., p. 263 314). Perhaps now lost in Souter.
