A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames (1896) by Charles Wareing Endell Bardsley

Of local origin from Southdean, Roxburghshire. James Sowdan in Lauder, no date (Lauder). Charles Suddane was burgess of Lauder in 1635 and other three of the name are in the Lauder Commissariot Record. Thomas Suddane was retoured heir in lands in Jedburgh in 1648 (Retours, Berwick, 276), and Thomas Soudden is recorded in Melrose, 1682 (RRM., III, p. 35). James Souden died in Stirling, 1940 (WScot). The place name was Sovdon in 1296, and It gave name to Soudoun Law.
