It has been suggested that this unusual surname is derived from a locality in Spofforth parish, Yorkshire, but that place's name was given by carriers of the surname. It appears to have arisen in the South East of England and is probably derived from a nickname. The most likely is someone who was involved in financial dealing or someone who always paid in coin; from the Latin specie, which referred to financial arrangements and payment in coin. Alternatively it could refer to someone who was eccentric or given to drink. It may also be a corruption of Spicer, a dealer in spices.
The Spaceys appear to have been a family with minor landholdings in the south and were represented in the clergy. The name made its way north cira 1500, where many with the name were tradesmen in the City of York.
