Spake Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

Local 'of Speke,' a township in the parish of Childwall, Lancashire.

Hugh Pilkington, of Speke, 1603: Wills at Chester.

Ellen Speake, of Dinckley, widow, 1614: ibid.

Charles Speak, of Goldshawe, 1670: ibid. (1660-80).

(a) Nick. Lower says, 'The Spekes of Somersetshire descend from Richard le Espek, who lived in the reign of Henry II. Wemworthy and Brampton, in Devonshire, were the original seats; but temp. Henry VI Sir John Speke married the heiress of Beauchamp, and so obtained Whitelackington, Somerset': Patronymica Britannica. This surname has a distinct origin. It stands for 'le speke,' the woodpecker, and is a nickname of the same class as Nightingale, Lark, Sparrowhawk, &c. (v. Geraldus Cambrensis). For an early instance v. Speck, which is but a variant of the same name.

1701. Baptised — Samuel, s. Richard Speake: St. James, Clerkenwell.

1725. Married — John Farrey and Mary Speake: St. Antholin (London).

A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames (1896) by Charles Wareing Endell Bardsley

1. Speke, a township in Lancashire. 2. See Speke.

Patronymica Britannica (1860) by Mark Antony Lower

The same as Speke; from Branford Speke (found Speak in one map) co. Devon. Speke is also the name of a township co. Lancaster. Lower says the Spekes of Somersetshire descend from Richard le Espek, who lived in the reign of Henry II., but that he is unable to explain Le Espek A correspondent of Notes and Queries thinks "Willi le Espec" may be a misreading for "Willi le Espee"—that is, William the Swordsman, or William of the Sword; another thinks espec may mean a spicer, who was formerly something between a grocer and a chemist, and he quotes Roquefort, "Especiaire, épicier, droquiste, apothecaire; de species, specierum." The Old French spec is an inspector.

Ludus Patronymicus (1868) by Richard Stephen Charnock
