A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames (1896) by Charles Wareing Endell Bardsley

From the town of Spalding in Lincolnshire. Radulphus de Spalding who witnessed a charter oi the mill of Caterline in Kincardineshire in 1225 (RAA., I, p. 90) is probably the first of the name recorded in Scotland. Magister John de Spaldyn witnessed a grant of lands in Aberdeen, c. 1294 (REA., I, p. 37). As Johan Despanyding (=De Spanyding he is mentioned as canon of Elgin, c. 1300 (Rec. Elgin, p, 10), and is probably the Johan de Spauyding who petitioned Edward I in 1304 to give him 20 oaks from his forest of Laund Morgund to build his church of Duffus (Bain, II, 1629, 1708). Symon de Spalding, parson of the church of Ogheltre in Ayrshire rendered homage in 1296 (ibid.,p. 206). Tytler mentions in his History of Scotland (I, p. 133, ed. of 1864) that at the iiege of Berwick by Bruce in 1318, one of the burgesses of the town named Peter de Spalding, disgusted with the severity of the governor, resolved to aid the besiegers. In reward for his services he received from Bruce in May, 1319, in exchange for his lands and tenements at Berwick, the lands of Ballourthy (Balzeordie) and Petmethey (Pitmachie) in Angus (Cornegies, Earls of Southesk, p. 482) together with the keepership of the royal forest of Kylgerry. William Spaldyng was elected a lineator of Aberdeen, 1398 (CRA., p. 374), Thomas de Spalding and David de Spalding held a tenement in Dundee in 1442 (Charters and writs, Dundee, p. 20), David Spaldeng of Dundee had a safe conduct into England, 1453 (Bain, IV, 1254), John de Spaldynge was deacon in Brechin, 1456 (REB., I, p. 182), ir 1479 George Spalding appears as provost of Dundee (Panmure, II, 251). The Spaldings are included in "The roll of the clannis that hes capitanes, cheiffis and chiftanes quhome on thai depend," 1587 (APS., III, p. 467). Spaldene 1684.
