Spatharios was a title in the royal court of the Byzantines. They were those trusted armed guards entitled to carry a sword (in Greek: Spatha) in the presence of the Emperor. They were the honorary guards of the Byzantine emperor.
When an emperor died or was deposed (often by assassination) his faithful guards were exiled to remote parts of the realm with their families instead of facing execution, as they would not be trusted by the new emperor.
