It may be an official name, the 'spyer,' i.e. watchman, from Old French espier. The first is a common surname in Kilbarchan. Willelmus Sper, witness in Perth in the reign of Alexander II (Scon, p. 55). Gilbert Spere was a juror in Irvine, 1417, and mention is made in 1418 of the tenement of Roger Spere there (Irvine, I, p. 20,126). David Spere was burgess of Glasgow in 1475 (LCD., p. 254), and in the following year Alexander Speir of Pettincrefe was depute of James, earl of Buchan (SBR., p. 256). John Speire was a witness in Glasgow in 1516 (REG., 492), Thomas Speir was a merchant burgess in Edinburgh, 1626 (Inquis., 1281), and David Speir was bailie of Irvine, 1664 (Irvine, II, p. 166).
