A monk of Dunfermline in 1502 bore the name of John Spendluff (CDE., 58), and Dene Vilyam Spendluf was a monk of the same house in the same year (DBR., 125). Mariote Spendluyff was a tenant in the barony of Stobo in 1514, in 1528 John Spendluyff was "rentillayt in ane ox gang of land" in Stobo, and in 1555 mention is made of Ambrois Spendlaw, late rentaller of the Harro of Stobo (Rental). The name is also found in England, and Bardsley's earliest example is dated 1273.
