This curious surname is found in Lanarkshire as early as the end of the thirteenth century. OF. espand-loue perhaps refers to disembowelling (Weekley, p. 260). In 1296 Emme Spendloue of the county of Lanark rendered homage for her lands (Bain, II, p. 209). In the same year a writ was issued to the sheriff of Lanark ordering him to restore to Simon Spendelove his lands which probably had been forfeited (ibid., 832). William Spendelove, hobelar in Berwick, is mentioned in 1312 (ibid., p. 398). Dobie Spendluf is in Peebles, 1457 (Renwick, Peebles, p. 23). A monk of Dunfermline in 1502 bore the name of John Spendluff (CDE., 58), and Dene Vilyam Spendluf was a monk of the same house in the same year (DBR., 125). Mariote Spendluyff was a tenant in the barony of Stobo in 1514, in 1528 John Spendluyff was "rentillayt in ane ox gang of land" in Stobo, and in 1555 mention is made of Ambrois Spendlaw, late rentaller of the Harro of Stobo (Rental). The name is also found in England, and Bardsley's earliest example is dated 1273.
(English) a nickname for an Amorous Individual [from Old English spendan, to spend + lufu, love] The d was dropped comparatively early: we find Spendelove in the Hundred-Rolls (a.d. 1274), but Spenlof as well as Spendlove in the Yorks Poll-Tax, a.d., 1379. Spendelo(w)e occurs in the late 16th cent.
Spendlove has been a Derbyshire name for six centuries and more. There was a William Spendelove of Essebourn (Ashbourn) in this county in the reign of Edward I. (H. R.). The name is still mostly found in the Derby district. Suckling Spendlove, attorney, was mayor of Beverley, in the East Riding in 1745 and 1760 (Poulson's "Beverlac"). In the time of Edward I. Spendelove was a name also found in Cambridgeshire, Hunts, and Oxfordshire (H. R.), and the name still occurs in Northamptonshir.
