From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

(English) One who made and sold spikes or nails.

Dictionary of American Family Names (1956) by Elsdon Coles Smith

User-submitted Reference

The Spickes name is relatively new (only existing since the late 19th century) and is one that stems from a name change by EliasSutton-Spickes of Mississippi, who, for undetermined reasons, dropped the "Sutton" from the family name and went with Spickes (also spelled as Spikes at certain periods).

The Spickes family (then Sutton) are descended from the Suttons of Dudley in the Midlands of England. In the 17th century, the Suttons (Spickes) came to Colonial America from Tenterden, Kent as a servant of the Tilden family. Not long after settling in Scituate, in the Plymouth Colony, George Sutton married into the Tilden family and converted to the Quaker faith. Fearing persecution, the family eventually moved from Massachusetts at the end of the 17th century to New Jersey and North Carolina (around Guilford County)

The family was predominantly Quaker until the end of the 18th century and by the early 19th century, the family moved from North Carolina to Georgia, then Alabama and finally Mississippi, where Elias Sutton-Spikes, a carpenter, fought in the Civil War on the Confederate side. At the war's end, Elias Sutton-Spikes went back to carpentry and before the family moved to Arkansas, Elias dropped the Sutton from his last name, although Sutton was used later as a middle name for some family members.

Today, the vast majority of the Spickes live in Arkansas, though there are some that live in Maryland, Delaware, Texas and California.
