SPINY: William Spiny, provost of the collegiate church of Tain, 1514 (Beauly, p. 184) derived his name from Spynie near Elgin.
SPYNIE: From Spynie in the parish of the same name in Moray. Henricus ae Spyny was vicar of Banf, 1323 (RAA., I, p. 223). William de Spyny who appears as canon of the church of Moray in 1363 (REM., p. 313) may be the William de Spyny who was procurator for the abbot of Aberbrothoc in 1375 (RAA., II, 34). John de Spyny petitioned for a canonry and prebend of Neu and Ros ven in Ros, 1407 (Pap. Pet., I, p. 635). Sir William Spyne or Spynie, provost of Thane or Tayne (Tain) in 1509 (OPS., II, p. 661) was dead before 1545 (Laing, 495). Espyny 1394.
(English) One who came from Spinney (thicket), in Cambridgeshire.
A thicket; a small plantation. Halliwell. Evidently the same as the Latin spinetum, a bushy place, or patch of thorns. The name is probably only another form of Thorne, anciently latinized "De Spineto." In Buckinghamshire, however, spinney means a brook.
Or De Spiney. Anscher, Robert, Eustace, William, Ranulph, de Spineto, the honour of Spiny, Normandy 1180-95 (Magni Rotuli Scaccarii Normanniae). The family was seated in Devon, where it long continued at Samford-Spiney.
