A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames (1896) by Charles Wareing Endell Bardsley

ME. spltal, an aphetised form of Old French hospital. The old Dumbartonshire family of Spittal derived their name from the lands of Spittal in the parish of Kilmaron, which at an earlier date had belonged to the Knights Hospitallers (Strathendrick, p. 252). Walter del Spetalle alias Walterus de Hospitali received from David II a charter of a tenth part of the lands of Kynynmunthe in the quarter of Fortheryf, 1365 (RMS,, I, 218,220), i nd these lands were in possession of Johannes de Spitale in 1395 (RPSA., p. 3). John Spitale was burgess of Edinburgh, 1423 (Egidii, p. 45), William Spittale de Luquhat had a precept of remission in 1526 (RSS. I, 3596), and dominus John Spettale was chaplain in Linlithgow, 1531 (Johnsoun). Henry Spittle, late bookbinder in Edinburgh, 1732 (Guildry, p. 142).
