User-submitted Reference

The original spelling is Sprecher, but when the first Sprecher moved from Germany to the US, Ellis Island misspelled it and it became Spraker. Sprecher or Spraker. It is of German and Swiss descent and has been translated to mean 'speaker'.

The first recorded Spraker to migrate to the US was Johann Christoph Spraker Sr. He had 9 children, settled in Rowan County, North Carolina. His eldest son, Johann Christoph Spraker Jr. moved to Wytheville, Virginia and made his roots there. My great grandfather moved to Baltimore, Maryland to work for Bethlehem Steel. As far as I know, there are Sprakers as far north as Maine, as far south as Florida - mostly along the east coast.
