From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

Spreull was the name of an old Dumbartonshire family, Walter Spreul, steward of Malcolm, earl of Levenax, had a charter from the earl of the land of Dalmuir or Dalmore, c. 1280, and c, 1290 witnessed a charter to Arthur Galbraith (Levenax, p. 30, 42). For his homage and service he obtained in the beginning of the reign of Robert I another charter of the lands of Dalquhen (ibid., p. 91). In 1296 Wautier Spreul of Lanarkshire rendered homage. His seal bears a hunting-horn, stringed, between three roses, S' Walteri Sprevile (Bain, II, p. 204,549). Walter Sproull paid to Exchequer the contribution of the Barony of Glasgow in 1366, and in 1368 Thomas Sprowl was receiver of stores for Edinburgh Castle (ER,, II, p. 259,306). Thomas Sprewl of Coldoun was witness, 1460 (Ayr, p. 35), and Patrick Spruyle is recorded in Edinburgh, 1580 (Soltre, p. 235). John Spreull (1646-1722), merchant of Glasgow, for nonconformity was twice tortured and imprisoned on the Bass Rock for six years. Spreuile 1308, Spreule 1547, Sprewile 1549, Sprewell 1573, Sprewyle 1529, Sproule 1369, Sproult 1372, Spruylle 1574, Sprwl 1488.
