Spring Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

Perhaps local, 'at the spring.' This name is found early in Aberdeen. Henry Spring in Berwickshire rendered homage, 1291 (RR.). John Spryng witnessed an Aberdeen charter in 1342 (REA., I, p. 72), and Andree Spryng was burgess of the town in 1362 (RMS., I, 104). Thomas Springe who had a charter of land of Gask with pertinents in sheriffdom of Abirdene, 1369 (RMS., I, 342), may be Thomas Spryng or Sprynger who appears as burgess there, 1396-99-1410 (REA., II, p. 293,296; SCM., V, p. 13), and was concerned in a dispute connected with a piece of waste ground, 1398 (CRA., p. 371). Ro. Sprinct was admitted burgess of Aberdeen, 1400 (NSCM., I, p. 1), and Thomas Sprinct is recorded there in 1408 (CWA., p. 313).

The Surnames of Scotland (1946) by George Fraser Black (1866-1948)

In dealing with Rice of Co. Limerick (Irish Families p. 257) reference was made to the Spring-Rice family. The Springs came to Ireland from Suffolk towards the end of the sixteenth century. It has been stated that the connexion of the two families arose from the marriage of Stephen Rice of Mount Trenchard, Foynes, Co. Limerick, with the daughter of Thomas Spring in 1785; it is of interest, therefore, to record the fact that in a Fiant of 1599a Kerry lady is described as Elizabeth Rhise alias Springe. Thomas Springe became controller of wines at Limerick in 1579, Thomas Springe (presumably the same man) was appointed Constable of Castlemaine Castle in 1584 and a Springe was M.P. for Kerry in 1585.

The Springs in fact became firmly established in Kerry, intermarrying with the Brownes (Kenmares) and other leading aristocratic families of west Munster. One at least-Edward Spring of Killaghagh, Co. Kerry-was transplanted to Connacht as a papist in 1656, but the majority remained in Kerry: King gives the number of Spring families in the county according to the 1911 census as eight.
