At the present time this name is usually spelt as above throughout Ulster; Sproulle, Sproul, Sprowle and Sprool are also current variants. The older spelling was Spruell: two “tituladoes” so called appear in the barony of Raphoe, Co. Donegal, in the census of 1659. As Sproule it is still found there. The name is very rare outside Ulster and the adjacent parts of some Connacht counties. Co. Tyrone is its main location.
