Sserwanga comes from a Kiganda phenomenal se-ruwanga. These where ritual performers in The Buganda Kingdom. They used to call spirits and enthrone chiefs in the central region of Uganda. Seruwanga means 'chief priest'. The time came when they rebelled against the royal family after the introduction of totems. They refused to be allocated in a clan. Yet every clan had to have a chief priest to call spirits in times of worship. So they had to rebel completely and in every clan thy got their own Seruwanga (sserwanga). Today every totem in a clan is named sserwanga. It's a universal name in all clans. Its meaning is 'one who calls spirits'.
