St Martin Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

"St, Martin, the military saint of France," says Lower, "was greatly honoured in Normandy, no less than twenty-five places bearing his name being given in the Itinéraire de la Norman" Alexander de St. Martin was a vassal of Countess Ada, mother of William the Lion, in her dower lands of Haddington, and appears as a witness in three of her charters (RPSA., p. 207—209). In an undated charter King David I granted him Alstanefurde and the land which Arnkil held by the boundaries between Hadingtoun and Alstanefurd, to be held of the king by the service of half a knight (Lawrie, p. 149-150). Some time later he received a charter of the same lands from Countess Ada (Laing, 2): "Ada the Countess, mother of the King of Scots, grants to Alexander de St. Martin, the lands of Elstaneford, by these same marches by which King David gave the same Elstaneford to him. She, moreover, gave Barowe, Donecaneslaye, Bangelpye, and that land which Uhtred son of Gilise held, and that land which is on the east side of Seton, by those marches by which her men walked the lands and delivered them to him: also the site of his mill on the Tyne, and one carucate of land in Carelsira, to wit, in Petollin, and one full toft in Hadintun, and another toft in Carel, all to be held in fee and heritage for the service of one knight, with sake and soke, tol and theam, infandthef and other liberties." He also witnessed the charter by King David granting lands to Walter de Riddale, c. 1150 (Lawrie, p. 179-180), and an undated charter by Countess Ada granting a toft in her burgh of Haddingtona (RD., 152). Alexander de St. Martin left a daughter, Ada, who granted half a mark annually to the Abbey of Holyrood from the rent of her mill at Alstanesford (LSC., p. 26). His brother Adulf accidentally killed Malcolm de Moreville when hunting, and the land of Langlaw was given to the Abbey of Dryburgh in reconciliation (Dryburgh, p. 68, 69). Magister Alexander de St. Martin was a prominent member of the chapter of St. Andrews in the beginning of the thirteenth century, and witnessed a confirmation by Johannes de Morham relating to the church of Pannebrid, c. 1219-46 (RAA., I, p. 20).
