St Michael Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

ST MICHAEL: Robert de St. Michael, probably a vassal of the earls of Dunbar, was one of the witnesses to the grant of Dundas to Helias, son of Huctred (Nat. MSS., I). William de S. Michael who had a toft in Munros from King William the Lion (LAC., p. 40), witnessed Eschina de London's gift of the church of Molle to the Abbey of Kelso in 1185 (Kelso, 146), and c. 1200 he witnessed the grant of the churches of Camsy and Altermunin to the same house (ibid., 226), and the gift of Balnebucth to Newbattle (Neubotle, 7). David de St, Michaele granted his father's toft in Munros to the Abbey of Lundors (LAC., p. 40). Roger de St. Michale settled in the Mearns, probably under a grant from William the Lion, and gave to the monks of Arnbroath, in pure alms, the lands of Mundurnachin (RAA., I, 54). He was succeeded in the lands by his nephew, Johannes de S. Michaele, who confirmed the grant of his uncle Roger (ibid., I, p. 55), and witnessed a charter by Richard Lupellus, dominus de Hawic, c. 1183 (RPSA., p. 262). Walter de St. Michaele held land in Brancheulla (Branxholm) in 1183 (ibid., p. 261), and William de St. Michael witnessed a quitclaim by Richard de Bancori of the whole land of Loyerwode (i.e. Locharwood), c. 1214-19 (Bain, I, 1684). John de S. Michael rendered homage at Elgin in 1296. His seal is vesicashaped, in two compartments. In the upper S. Michael, armed with lance and shield, slaying the dragon; in the lower, a mounted man with hawk on wrist, addressed by a figure on foot (perhaps the prophet Balaam and the angel: S' Johanis de Sco Michaele (Bain, II, 796). A later John de Sancto Michaele, procurator-fiscal of the king in 1427, may be the John de St. Mychaele who was appointed legal procurator of the Abbey of Kelso at courts of Edinburgh and elsewhere in 1435 (HP., II, p. 161; Kelso, 528). The old family of the name seems to have ended in an heiress who was married to Henry Kerr, sheriff of Roxburghshire, in 1359.
