James Stubyl was tenant of Balmyle, 1460, and William Stabyl, tenant in Grange of Abyrbothry, 1468 (Cupar-Angus, I, p. 142). The name also appears in the same record in the fifteenth century as Stabil, Stablis, Stibles, Stibull, Stibulis, and Stubil. Robert Stibillis or Stibles, son of the late John Stiblis, was admitted burgess of Dundee in 1593 (Wedd., p. 62), Robert Stibbillis appears as lector of the church of Dundee in 1623 (REB., II, 242), and Alexander Stable is recorded in Forgyside, 1698 (Moray).
