This surname is derived from an occupation. 'the stalker,' a huntsman, a fowler. 'Stalk, to use a stalking-horse for obtaining wild-fowl and game' (Halliwell).

From the occupation of 'stalker,' one who stalks, as a deerstalker. Patrick Stalcare had a remission in 1427 (Rose, p. 126), and twenty years later John Stalcare is in record as burgess of Berwick (RD., 461). Donald Stalkair leased the church of Glenyleff in 1447 (Cupar-Angus, I, p. 126), and John Stalcare was one of an int uest anent a fishing on the Tweed in 1467 (RD., p. 358). The name of William Staiker, goldsmith and guild-brother in Glasgow, 1607 (Burgesses) is probably to be taken as a spelling of Stalker. Stalkar 1491. The name is also recorded in Aberdeen, 1605 (CRA., p. 277).
