The lands of Estirbalbretane were leased to Richard Starke in 1376 (RHM., I, p. lxvi). Burke (Landed gentry) says the family of Stark claims descent from Alexander Robertson of Strowan who died 1506 or 1507. Tradition relates that Alexander, younger son of Paul Robertson, having taken part in the family feuds of the day (who at that time did not), was found guilty of manslaughter and fied to the Lowlands where he acquired the lands of Ballindean, having changed his name to Stirk or Stark. General John Stark (1728-1822) of the American Revolution was son of Archibald Stark, born in Glasgow, 1677.
