Stava Surname Meaning
User-submitted Reference
There are two possible origins of the surname Stava. Both probably come from a Slavic word (more specifically from the Czech language). The first possible one is šťáva, which means 'juice' or 'squash'. The second one is a word, stav, which has more meanings, but the most logical would mean something like a 'caste'. This comes from historical situation in the Bohemian land during the 13th century. In these times, social groups began to form, based on their wealth, faith or nobility. Representatives of these groups had meetings of some form of proto-senate, which didn't have much real power and was quite far from democracy as we know it. Later, during the 15th and 16th centuries, the power of these gatherings was striped to the minimum. It is possible that some representatives took the surname Stav as their own, because in these times, not many people had an actual surname in Bohemia. Later, when people started to migrate to a different parts of the world, this surname speed with them, and over time, changed its form bit by bit. This theory is quite plausible, based on the distribution of this surname (Czech Republic, USA, Canada, Russia) and the historical events, which caused a lot of Czech people to leave their country (World War I and II, the occupation of the Czech Republic by the USSR).
