Syncopated farms of Steven, which see. Found in Fife, the Lothians, Ayrshire and Roxburghshire. Alan Steyn was a monk of Kilwinning Abbey, 1557. John Steyne was burgess freeman of Glasgow in 1575, and James Stein in 1583 (Burgesses). As forename: Steyn Tran in Irvine, 1450 (Irvine, I, 45), and Steyne of Wod, voter in Monkland, 1519 (Simon, 45). Katie Steven or Stein, who lived a solitary life at Laighpark, parish of Kirkoswald, is thought to have been the 'Cutty-sark' heroine of Burns's 'Tam o' Shanter.'
This name was introduced into Britain by the Normans, with whom it was a favorite. Although found occasionally in England before 1066 its use then was due really to Christian tradition, Stephen (Stephanos) having been the first Christian martyr after Christ. Stephen, diaconus, witnessed a charter by Bishop Edward, c. 1150-71 (RPSA., p. 297). James Stephen, provost and merchant in Elgin, 1780 (Moray). Thomas Stephen published his History of the Church of Scotland in 4 v. (1843-45). In Scotland the name exists in the more common form Steven, which see.
