(Ger.) 1 Dweller by a Rock [ = Stein (q.v.) + the agential suff. -er] 2 Stone, i.e. Hard or Strong Warrior [O.Ger. Steinher, Steinhar: see Stein, and + O.H.Ger. Old Saxon heri, hari, army; in pers. nomencl. short for heriman(n, hariman(n]
(German, Dutch, Swedish) Dweller near a stone or rock, often a boundary mark; one who came from Stein, the name of several villages in Switzerland; descendant of Staino or Stein, pet forms of names beginning with Stein (stone), as Steinher and Stainold.
(from a place name) or (from an ancestor's occupation) Steiner is often derived from any one of the many localities all over Poland which are called Kamien. The translation of Kamien is “stone” or “rock.” Sometimes the presence of a rock formation caused a number of localities in Galicia to be called shteyn in Yiddish and their Jewish inhabitants were referred to as Steiner. But a number of the German Steiners took their name from the occupation of jewelers. Jewelers were often called Steiner because they dealt in precious stones, called Edelsteine in German.
